Downloading Youtube Videos

The easiest way to get embedded video is with a little Firefox add-on called Video DownloadHelper.

Once you've installed it into Firefox and restarted, you'll see the cluster of gray balls light up and start spinning when they sense downloadable content.

Just click on the down-triangle next to the colorful balls and choose .mp4 if it's an option (.flv files are not as friendly for most systems).

More detail (and other, more complicated methods) on this older post.

Teaching in Glass Houses (Steve Dembo)

Notes at ITSC 2010.

How do we keep kids safe?
I want my kid's first, last name AND city to be attached to their best work.  I don't want him thinking that he is anonymous online.

90% of middle school students have the maturity level and caution of middle schoolers!

Schools and libraries may not receive E-Rate discounts unless they adopt policies addressing:

•Educating minors about appropriate online behavior

•Cyberbullying awareness

•Interacting with adults on social networking sites and chat rooms (THIS IS NOT PROHIBITING IT)

College Confidential

Highlight a student's username;  Google them; Find out as much as possible, both good and bad.

Newsmap

I saw this a while ago before Google bought it, but wouldn't this be a good jumping-off point for kids in a reading class?
